The pitch control is automatic. It tracks the input source and tries to output the correct notes, it's meant to be played from a bass guitar. The headphone output of the TR606 was controlling the SYB3, so it's basically just the equivalent of the drum pattern. But, because there are numerous tones coming from the drum machine it makes it jump around like crazy. All the modulation in the sound comes from altering the separate drum levels on the 606 and fiddling with the envelope dials on the SYB3. I found that you can kind of write a tune by using the toms on the 606.
